Option Two: Locate Satiric Texts, Analyze Them, and Start a Discussion

If you decide that the Patton Oswalt blog reading and tasks are not for you, you can instead choose to navigate the internet and find two pieces of satire that address one of the following vices or follies. In addition to locating the satiric pieces, you will also need to conduct some analysis tasks, and you will create a few discussion questions to go along with your texts and analysis. Please read the specifics of this below:

Here is the list of vices and follies from which you may select:
  • Addiction
  • Aggression
  • Apathy
  • Arrogance
  • Bigotry
  • Dishonesty
  • Extremism
  • Gullibility
  • Greed
  • Hastiness
  • Ignorance
  • Intolerance
  • Jealousy
  • Narcissism
  • Obsession
  • Racism
  • Sexism
  • Stubbornness
  • Wastefulness/Gluttony
Once you decide on a vice or folly that you want to work with, you will go to an internet browser (i.e. Google) and try to find two satiric pieces that call attention to that vice or folly. One of these pieces should be written satire/humor and the other piece should be visual satire/humor (like an info-graphic or a cartoon).

When you find these two satiric pieces, you will create a Google Doc and paste their links in the Doc. Then, in that same Google Doc, please do the following:
  1. Identify each piece's SOAPSTone
  2. Explain how each piece uses satire to call attention to the vice or folly you selected. Be specific with your explanation. Make sure you're explaining how various aspects of the pieces SOAPSTone as well as various satire/humor techniques are used to communicate disdain of your selected vice or folly.
  3. Then, generate 2-3 analysis or evaluation level questions for your peers to respond to. You only need 2-3 questions TOTAL; however, make sure you ask at least one question per piece.
    • Keep in mind that analysis level questions will ask you to examine and/or scrutinize something in order to explain how one (or a few) smaller aspects of something work to achieve a bigger goal or impact the piece as a whole. Examples of analysis level questions would be: "How does the author of this piece use diction to create an aggressive tone?" or "What impact does the figurative language in the piece have on the text as a whole?"
    • Keep in mind that evaluation level questions will ask you to make judgement or evaluations of something. Evaluation level questions ask you to generate your own opinions or perspectives on something. However, a thoughtful, well-developed explanation/rationale for those judgments and evaluations are also required. Examples of evaluation level questions would be: "Do you think this piece is effective in achieving its goal? Why or why not?" or "Do you think this message could be communicated in another way? If yes, how? If no, why?"
  4. Then, after you have completed steps 1-3, copy everything from your Google Doc and then paste it in the body of a comment to this post. Make sure you write your name at the start of the post if you're not logged into your account.
  5. Finally, you will browse the comments, satiric pieces, analysis, and questions of your classmates. You will then select and respond to the discussion questions for three other classmates. When you post a comment to respond to a classmate's discussion questions, try to post your comment as a reply to their comment.
I recommend using Thursday's class to locate your two pieces of satire and complete the analysis tasks. That will give you all of Friday's class to create the discussion questions, post everything to the blog, browse the work of your classmates, and select four that you will respond to discussion questions for.

    SOAPSTONE
    comic-
S- peoples laziness when it comes to work and there narcissism when they believe they shouldn’t have to work.
    O-
A- the general public, most likely young adults, like 20-30 year olds or teenagers
P- to talk about how people don’t want to have to work to work, they just want to get rewarded for doing nothing and how so many people feel like they are entitled to this.
S- Jim Davis?, calvin and hobbes illustrator
    Tone- humorous and innocent
    article-
S- the LGBTQ community and how to “deal”with them
O- the rise in attention and importance of this topic
A- adults in the U.S. specifically Arkansas
P- to reveal the ignorance of political officials and address the ridiculousness of some of their ideas, specifically on LGBTQ rights and specifically poking fun of the Arkansas Senator and the conservative party
S- Jordan King, writer for Rock City Times
    Tone- cringe-worthy, but jaunty/upbeat
    Explanation
Comic- the illustrator makes the humor very blunt. There is no questioning what it is trying to say. The illustrator uses common sayings like one-in-a-million and silver plater. These sayings are often used when describing an extremely rare event. The last box shows how people believe they are entitled to doing nothing by saying I deserve it, when the other character just walks away meaning he obviously doesn’t deserve it.
Article- the author uses misguided thought process, absurd analogies, and inaccurate facts to reveal the senators complete ignorance, false entitlement, and intolerance of the LGBTQ community. Misguided thought process reveals the senators ignorance because it sounds as though he doesn’t think through what he is actually saying and he doesn’t understand that this is intolerance and it is wrong. The absurd analogies also reveal his ignorance. For example saying putting them on an island is okay because America did it in the past with Japanese Internment camps and that wasn’t bad either. This is obviously incorrect which shows the senators ignorance once more. Also the author uses irony to add more humor to the piece.
    Questions
Compared to a longer article does the comic still get its point across effectively? Why or why not?
In the article the author gives the senator a false sense of entitlement. What is an example, and how does this aid in enhancing overall purpose of the piece?
Would you say that the author of the article uses more blatant or discret satire to prove his point? Give an example of the blatant and discrete satire.

I think the author uses more blatant satire in this article. I think it's blatant blatant when he says ¨Rapert says that Arkansas history shows a successful track record for singling out people who are different and relocating them.¨ When saying this it sounds a little extreme and they wouldn't really do that.

    Vice/folly: Sexism
    Visual satire (Cartoon):

    Subject: sexism in the workplace
Occasion: someone claiming they want to get rid of sexism while remaining sexist
Audience: people who are sexist, or ignorant as to what sexism is
Purpose: to call attention to problems with sexism in society
Speaker: someone who believes sexism needs to end
    Tone: satiric, horatian, ironic
Devices: Caricature is used, to stereotype sexist ment. Additionally, irony is used when the guy is telling the woman that he wants to get rid of sexism so she can feel like one of “the chaps.” This is a sexist comment itself.

Written satire: Teach Women Not To Interrupt Men (http://www.avoiceformen.com/satire/teach-women-not-to-vaginterrupt-men/)
    Subject: Sexism in our society
Occasion: a woman asks a man a question and is seen as inconsiderate and needy
Audience: people who are sexist, or don’t understand how unreasonable they are being in their sexist thoughts
Purpose: to call attention to the superior attitude some men have towards women
Speaker: someone who thinks sexism is a prevalent issue in our society
    Tone: satiric, juvenalian, condesending
Devices: Comparison is used when the character in the article claims that women are being greedy by wanting more protection and aid with such problems as abortion, while men simply have sexual needs that are more important. The writer also makes a new word “vaginterrupt” again revealing just how absurd this inhumane view of women is.

    Discussion Questions:
What effect does the use of caricature have on the attitude of the cartoon?
How are women stereotyped in the article and how does that reveal the satire of the piece?

What effect does the use of caricature have on the attitude of the cartoon?
The effect of the caricature has on the attitude of the cartoon is sexist. This is because the cartoon has two men saying feel free to feel like a chap. Which are cowboy pants, so the cartoonist is making the men sexist by telling the woman to feel like a man pretty much.

    Ignorance
    http://www.maxgustafson.com/environment/spare-a-thought-for-the-developed-world/

Subj- Rising gas prices and rising sea level, global warming
Occ- Recent rise in gas prices in the US
Aud- Americans who are ignorant to the fact that they are not the only people that live on the earth
Purp- to call attention to how Americans make their issues world issues
Speak- cartoonist who feels that America has narcissistic and ignorant tendency
    Tone- satiric, casual
This cartoon calls attention to how Americans are ignorant of the rest of the world and only focus on their own problems. The cartoon points this out by having these two Pacific Islanders with their home underwater talking about the “poor people” living in America because they have high gas prices. It is funny because it understates the condition of these two people who only have their heads above the water and how they are trying to think of ways to help Americans.

    http://dailycurrant.com/2015/09/07/sarah-palin-native-americans-should-go-back-to-nativia-3/

Subj- Sarah Palin’s opinion of immigration in America
Occ- 2015, start of presidential campaign cycle
Aud- readers of the Daily Currant and other Americans
Purp- to call attention (yet again) to Palin’s ignorance on the immigration issue, he/she also highlighted how some American’s are also ignorant by including that Palin ran for vice president and was the governor of Alaska.
Speak- writer from the Daily Currant who found her comments funny and wanted to share it
    Tone- satirical, condensing
This article points out the ignorance of Sarah Palin’s thoughts on immigration simply by reporting on her interview with Fox News. The majority of the article is her quotes which say stuff like, Native-Americans “should go back to Nativia or where ever they came from,’’ and that if they don’t “start speaking American- then they should be sent home.” These quotes are enough to make you laugh because they are blatantly wrong.

-The article is condescending because it states facts known by the typical american also it is condescending to the voters. It is saying look at the stupid person you voted for, how could you be so stupid to vote her in.
-The comic brings up the idea of “first world problems”. The United states is worried about gas prices going up while other people are living in terrible conditions, such as the comic. What adds to the fact is that America isn’t talking about their problems, but they are talking about America's measly problem and showing concern

The cartoon really makes me look at myself for the real problems by thinking what others are going through, and my problems don't seem like a big deal. It also makes you think that all of those problems about global warming and pollution are big problems and my problems are if I am going to get a good grade in AP Chem.

    Article-
    http://dailycurrant.com/2015/08/14/donald-trump-thinks-of-one-woman-whos-not-a-disgusting-animal/

Subject: Donald Trump’s views on women
    Occasion: Republican debate
Audience: Sexists, those who agree with Trump’s views
Purpose: Call attention to the vice of sexism. The idea that men are better than women.
Speaker: The Daily Currant writer, one who is opposed to Trump running for president.
    Tone: Satiric, mocking

This article uses caricature and invectives to mock the human vice of sexism. The article makes fun of Trump, making him seem arrogant, while also comparing women to object such as barbie dolls. The author insults women in such a way that is so absurd, it can only be satiric.

Discussion Question: What impact does the figurative language have on the piece? What else is the author satirizing in this article besides sexism?

This cartoon uses irony to show the sexism in workplaces today. The sign says there is equal opportunities, yet the hole is shaped to fit a generic businessman, showing the business is only really looking for one type of employee.

In the article figurative language that is used consist of: analogy (Barbie, Sarah Palin) and objectification ( women are trophies). By references famous things people are more able to make connections. By saying women are not people the author is exaggerating Trumps views to get the point across that Trump is sexist.
This piece also satirizes Trumps obsession with the rich by talking about how money is the only thing that matters.
Yes, I think the cartoon very effectively makes its point. By making the shape of the entry only suitable for men and then putting a sign saying equal opportunity employer it shows that often times women are told that they have equal opportunity in paper, but often times it doesn’t carry over to real life.

  7. Satire Write Up (Option 2)

    http://www.theonion.com/article/report-90-of-waking-hours-spent-staring-at-glowing-2747

Subject- America’s addiction with technology and its effect on society.
Occasion- The world’s ever growing need for more technology and to be up to date with the biggest and the best.
Audience- The users of this technology and the one’s who are obsessed with it. So most of America.
Purpose- To give attention to the fact that America is obsessed with technology and the obsession is only growing worse. The Onion uses satire and sarcasm to illustrate this idea.
    Speaker- Writer’s of the Onion
    Tone- Very sarcastic and satirical.

This article by The Onion uses some very obvious satire to give attention to the technology obsession. Throughout the article, The Onion uses fake names and professions to create fake quotes that give attention to their point. These fake authorities give the idea more credibility, even though it is all fake. Also throughout the piece the technology is never actually called by a specific name; it is referenced as “rectangles.” Using the word rectangle rather than computer or tablet makes the whole idea seem very childish due to the childish language that they are using.

Cartoon on man choosing Internet over Water in a desert.

    Subject- The addiction to technology.
Occasion- The growing obsession with computers and technology in the world today.
Audience- The users of technology and the people who are addicted to it.
Purpose- The use an illustration to show that some people have replaced vital needs for technology. It is to show that technology has become a necessity in American’s lives.
Speaker- A blogger from LifeConfusions.com addressing the idea of internet and technology addicition.
    Tone- Satirical and ironic.

This illustration of a man choosing Internet over Water in a desert is used to show the addiction to technology in society today. The picture is obviously a hyperbole because in this actual situation no one would choose to browse the internet rather than survive but the picture does an excellent job in getting its point across. Also the use of a cartoon makes the whole idea more humorous and less serious. Because it is a cartoon man and a cartoon sign, it adds to the work on the satire.

    Questions:

How does the use of false authorities add to the piece written by The Onion?
How do the metaphors in The Onion’s piece add to the strength of the satire?

In the piece senator Jason Rapert proposes to use nuclear weapons to get the ice of the roads during the winter. Rock City Times uses lioties to say “ There will be no negative outcomes, as long as it is a tactical placement aimed just at the roads that human casualty should be a minimum.” Which it shouldn't have any human casualties at all, showing they don't really care for about the people.

    1. I believe that with nuclear weapons , governments feel like they have power and with that power they can "rule the world". They could "do" that by threatening other nations with nuclear warfare, killing the citizens and demolishing the land. The article does make a good point, the sarcasm makes a pro-founding point that nuclear weapons don't fix much. According to the the cartoon, the use of the word rich and the composure of the man shows arrogance. His facial structure never changes nor his body language changes. Speaking about the language, using the words "terribly", "personally", and "rich" makes it seem that the man doesn't care what happens to the other people on this earth, he only cares for himself.

O- Increase in plagiarism and kids being caught cheating.
    A- Teacher's, Students, Parents
P- To show how ridiculous it sounds to take so much time to plan cheating rather than studying.
    S- Teacher, Author
    Tone- Sarcastic, fed-up, concerned

The author of this article uses satire in a way that makes the article sound like a class. This is ironic because the article is about cheating in your school classes and the proper way to do so. By making the article act as a list of instructions on how to cheat in your school classes, the author makes his satiric point very obvious and does it in a clever way.

    A- Football fans
P- To show the difference in punishments for crimes in the NFL
    S- Sports fans
    Tone- confused, angry

The picture shows a couple at a dinner table and the man is reading a newspaper article about Tom Brady being suspended 4 games for deflating the footballs. As the husband is yelling “FOUR GAMES?!?” the wife refers to the Ray Rice incident say that if he deflated the balls by punching them in an elevator, he would have only gotten a 2 games suspension because that is what Ray Rice got for beating his wife.

    Question:
How does this picture reflect the unfair punishments in the world today?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Nathan G:
In Connor B. cartoon it shows that the punishments in today’s society are very unjust. A football player like tom brady will never experience a punishment like an everyday human like you and I. Simple because we set different standards of punishment for certain classes of people.
By adding all of the rhetorical questions in the article, the article instantly becomes more sarcastic. By adding in all of these questions you don’t want/need answered because you already know the answer makes it ten times more sarcastic.

Written: is combined with imagery to show the humor in the piece Governor Hutchinson Releases State of the State Video, Promises for More Candy at Parades the author is using caricature with putting the governor's head on a lady's body to show that the he is very uncaring about what happens to the state. In addition the piece uses an a obsured thought process to show the governor's ignorance to more important problems the state is facing. Also the piece touches on the way the governor gave his speech to show his ignorance towards addresses other members to get the best problems addressed. Also the article seems to be a parody of speeches of people that are in bad situations. For examples, in movies, when the father is going away to war or something as intense, he gives a speech like this and telling the child to take care of his mom. However, this one isn’t in a situation as intense as war, making this a parody. Also with the phrase “Kevin, you take care of Mommy”, the author mimics those speeches in the movies.

How well do you think the message of the article was presented? What could have been done to get the message better?

Subject: The racism with police especially towards African Americans
Occasion: The growing amount of incidents with police towards African Americans
Audience: Anyone concerned with the recent incidents between police and society
Purpose: To call attention towards incidents were African Americans and other people of color are accused of doing something due to them being their certain race.
Speaker: Someone who was concerned with these recent incidents
    Tone: Satirical

This cartoon calls attention to the issue of people of color being accused of breaking into houses that are really theirs. These incidents happen to be at the houses that the people actually owned. The person behind this cartoon used a caricature of Barack Obama to bring out his dominant, recognizable features. The artist uses this to show that due to their distinctive features, making them the focus for police arrests. Also due to racism still being a prevalent issue in this country still, allows the artist to use the distinguishing characteristics as a way to portray the that.

Why did the author specifically choose the president as an example in this cartoon? Why not a regular person?

    S- Racism and cultural ignorance/stereotyping
O- Stereotypes and cultural ignorance are still very present in day to day American society
A- Any American who still stereotypes people of different cultures
P- To expose how primarily white Americans are still racist to a degree
    S- Movie writer, Satirist
    Tone- Satiric, Ironic
    2.
This video calls attention to racism in America through use of two different men and their actions towards two sets of parents that belong to a minority. The main interrogator acts like a generic culturally ignorant person and calls an Indian guy an ¨Arab¨ and follows with a sentence implying that he believes all middle easterners are terrorists. Then, when he tries to communicate to the Korean parents, he uses a translator, yet when the parents reply in perfect english, the translator says he can’t understand them and says that they´re ¨using a [Korean] dialect¨ he´s never heard before, making it ironic.

Do you think this piece effectively exaggerates the stereotypic racist white american? Why or why not?

    A- The general public
P- To expose how we generally accuse the wrong people of being greedy
    S- Satiric cartoonist
    Tone- Satiric, Ironic, Sarcastic
    2.
This picture satirically calls attention to the way we accuse the wrong people of being greedy. It uses sarcasm and irony in the inclusion of a nurse because lots of people would look at her demanding a $100 a year raise and think she’s greedy but we should be focusing on all the other people up there who’re making way more than they deserve. It successfully achieves its purpose in calling this out because after looking at it for less than a second the word “Nurse” grabs your attention because it doesn’t belong there.

    ation/
    Ignorance

    Cartoon:
S - Michele Obama´s initiative for healthier eating and a healthier lifestyle.
O - The rise of obesity and the health issues relating to it in America.
A - People who oppose the initiative, unhealthy people
P - This shows the ignorance of people who are eating unhealthy. People need to realize that your life and health is more important than enjoying your food, and they need to understand that initiatives like Michele Obama´s are intended to help them.
S - Someone in favor of Obama´s policy.
    Tone - mocking, overexaggerating

This cartoon uses satire by mocking people who are against health initiatives. The sign is a prime example of this mockery because either option it presents will result in death, and this shows that the artist is making fun of how blind people are to the negative effects bad health will have on their life. By mocking this group of people, the artist shows how ignorant some people can be, even if the ignorance is at their own detriment.

Would the cartoon be more effective if the humor was less harsh? Why or why not?

How does the author use diction to create a harsh tone?

    Article:
S - Legalization of marijuana in Colorado
O - Marijuana was recently legalized for recreational use in Colorado, being the first state to legalize it in America.
A - People who are uninformed about marijuana and its effects
P - To show that some people are extremely ignorant about the effects of particular drugs, and people will believe something like marijuana will kill you just because the government tells them it´s bad.
S - Someone in support of the legalization of marijuana
    Tone - Sarcastic, absurd, mocking

This article calls attention to ignorance very blatantly. If you know anything about the effects of marijuana, it is apparent that the author is extremely sarcastic throughout the whole article. The author heavily utilizes hyperbole in the article, and the combination of both sarcasm and hyperbole contribute to make the article simply absurd, and it shows that anyone who would take the article seriously has to be extremely ignorant. For example, the article states, “37 people were killed” by marijuana on the first day it was made legal. Marijuana is pretty much impossible to overdose on, which shows the absurdity of the article. The author calls attention to ignorance by writing a completely absurd article which isn’t intended to be taken seriously at all.

Do you think the absurdity of the article makes it less effective? How else could this message be communicated?

    S- addiction to cell phones
O- Modern times of electronic usage
A- people who are over using electronics
P- to show the travesties of people on their cellular devices while in a vehicle
S- creator of the cartoon; concerned people of america about cell phone addiction.

    Article
    http://www.deseretnews.com/article/700042745/Addiction-to-glowing-rectangle-may-be-rewiring-our-brains.html?pg=all
    S- cell phone addiction
O- generations are seeing a change in cell phone use in modern day
A- parents to watch for teens use of cellphones.
P- show the controvesy of cell phones
    S- kevin horrigan
    Tone- satiric

In both of these satiric pieces, the author/creator is using multiple humor strategies to call attention to the vice of addiction. In the cartoon, immediately we are horrified by the image. The blood and the accident create a sense disgust, along with sorrow. As well as the woman standing in the center taking a selfie. All of these things are used to show the dangers of cell phone addiction.
In the article the author uses diction to show the distinct problem with cell phone usage. By referring to them as glowing rectangles that makes their value decrease drastically, from expensive pieces of technology, to just rectangles. Thus making it seem that what we are doing on cell phones isn’t important.

Questions- Why does the creator of the cartoon place a female in the center? what effect does this have on the piece as a whole?
The author relates to cell phones as “glowing rectangles” does this change the effect of the article because of that change in diction? Explain.

The artist puts the girl in the center to draw attention to the fact that we have become so self-absorbed and obsessed with technology that even after a severe accident, we would rather take pictures of ourselves than worry about injured people. This is an exaggeration of the degree to which we have become obsessed with technology and it makes the point much more evident.
